Community engagement
How we work with community
Respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land
Much of our infrastructure crosses the lands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We aim to become a role model in engaging with these communities.
A core part of our work includes new towers, new fibre routes and repairs to our fixed network sites facades. It’s important that we care for Country, protect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands, artefacts and community interests and consider environmental and heritage matters.
We work with our partners to increase Indigenous participation in our supply chain, project design and delivery, creating employment and procurement opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
— Vanessa Hounsell, Senior Advisor Indigenous Affairs, Telstra InfraCo
Building Indigenous knowledge through learning
We offer various learning opportunities for our teams, such as training, cultural immersion experiences, and programs that promote and build understanding, knowledge, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their ongoing relationship with Country and continuing connection to culture, community, waterways, land and seas.
Partnering with Indigenous organisations
Telstra partners with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations to deliver the Indigenous Workforce Program (IWP) in Queensland, Torres Strait Islands, Northern Territory and Western Australia. The program employs Indigenous businesses and contractors to manage the grounds maintenance of our regional and remote sites. From two pilots and 30 sites in 2013, these businesses now manage more than 1500 sites.
Telstra InfraCo Art Installation Program
Public art connects people and place. We’re proud to play a part by working with local councils and communities to improve the visual appeal of our network sites through art.

We welcome your artwork proposal
To apply for the Telstra InfraCo Art Installation Program, please submit your artwork concept. If your work cannot be applied to the site itself, it may be adapted to the surrounding area.
Our Art Installation Program offers two themes:
Theme 1
Celebrating First Nations communities
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art is about storytelling. It expresses identity, culture, spirituality and relationships to Country. We hope to help build better relationships with First Nations communities by supporting their artwork on our sites.
Theme 2
Network connection and community
This theme explores telecommunications history and aims to give artists a canvas to show their sense of belonging within a community and its relationship to the exchange.
