Asset Protection and Relocation

We work with clients and industry to minimise damage to critical infrastructure that could disrupt essential services, cause customer outages or safety risks.

Protecting our network

As part of our commitment to protecting Telstra’s network, the team at InfraCo works closely with requesting parties whose proposed development may conflict with the location of our underground assets. When such conflicts cannot be avoided, InfraCo can carry out the necessary civil and construction works to relocate Telstra’s infrastructure safely and efficiently.

This typically consists of pits, manholes, cables, fibre and underground conduit, poles or other structures, including buildings.

Asset Protection and Relocation

What should you do if your project needs our underground or aerial assets to be relocated.

Asset damage

Let us know if you've found Telstra network assets that have been damaged.

Requesting a Relocation

You should never try to move or alter Telstra’s network infrastructure without authorisation. By law, only authorised people can work on our assets or enter a facility owned or operated by us. Any interference, including unauthorised entry or tampering, may result in legal action.

We aim to maintain, protect and safely relocate Australia's largest telecommunications network. It’s important we reduce the amount of damage that occurs to this network, both to reduce the cost to the public and in the interest of health and safety. If your investment or development project requires the relocation of Telstra’s asset, please contact the InfraCo team as early as possible in your planning stage. Our team of highly skilled specialists will work with you to develop a solution that will remove the conflict and allow your investment or development to proceed. It is important to note that any protection or relocation solution is undertaken at the requesting party's expense.

With your help, we can reduce this number and avoid the risk of:

  • injury or death to workers and members of the community
  • costly damage to expensive assets
  • unnecessary repair costs
  • disruption to services and inconvenience to the public.

To request relocation of a Telstra asset or a commercial works to be completed, fill in the Relocation Request form or contact us on 1800 810 443 from 9:00am to 6:00pm AEST Monday to Friday.

FAQs

Asset Relocation includes the protection, removal, reconstruction, relocation and any other work necessary to protect Telstra plant and equipment from damage both on public and private property.

This might include:

  • alterations, cable protection and the relocation of any Telstra network equipment
  • lead-ins for refurbished or partially demolished buildings, where the facade is retained for example
  • recovery of a lead-in because of the demolition of premises
  • requests from customers for the relocation of Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and Telstra lead-in cable, where it's associated with building alterations or the addition of works
  • relocation of lead-in due to refurbishment of a building.

Commercial Works includes:

  • the extension of pit and pipe from the Network Boundary to Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) (e.g. data monitoring for cameras, lifts, or weather reporting)
  • temporary connections (such as construction site sheds; fibre available in Telstra Fibre-only areas)
  • lead-in changes or second lead-ins (for sheds or additional dwellings)

Once your request has been received by InfraCo, we’ll contact you to discuss your project requirements in more detail.

Project Lifecycle

  1. Contact us – Project request received
  2. Evaluation – Discuss Project/Scope requirements
  3. Tendering – Source quote/s for the works required
  4. Quoting – Quotation issues for Acceptance
  5. Scheduling – Delivery Partner will make contact to discuss work commencement
  6. Construction – Works are scheduled and completed
  7. Completion – Completion Notice issued

Typically, we’ll contact you within 5 – 7 business days to discuss and may request additional information; this may include a site meeting to discuss your investment or development plan and the best proposed solution.

We'll then send the proposed solution to our Delivery Partner/s who'll provide a quote for the on-site works. This step will take approximately 10 working days.

On receipt of a quote from our Delivery Partner/s, our team will evaluate each quote (as applicable) and select the best value for money quote, that meets our requirement along with your development. InfraCo will then submit a formal proposal to you, which will include all costs including our ticket of work and project management costs.

Following your review of our offer and any response to clarification questions, if you wish to proceed with the proposed solution our quote must be signed and returned before any works can be scheduled.

Depending on the work required, there may be a delay in the Commencement date, if materials need to be ordered or land access requests need to be lodged. Our Delivery Partner may also need to engage with or await your developer or contractor to complete other works, but usually they're able to work with your schedule.

It is important to note that Telstra may request the payment of our invoice upfront in order to progress the proposed solution. Payment must be received within the defined timeframe, otherwise our proposal will expire and a new quote will be required.

Once the proposed solution has been completed on site, our Delivery partner will notify InfraCo to submit a Completion Notice to you, which will enable your development or investment project to progress.

It's common to have Telstra cables running through private property or road reserve, because it's the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to install and maintain our communications network.

If our network is found to be unsafe or has the potential to be impacted by the proposed development, we must have our assets moved or protected at the expense of the property developer or owner, as outlined in the Telecommunications Act of 1997.

All companies have a Duty of Care when undertaking construction work, regardless of whether this is on public or private property if there's an expectation that utility services exist.

For further information and to obtain a copy of this legislation, visit the Federal Register of Legislation page.

Under no circumstances should anyone try to move or alter Telstra's network infrastructure without authorisation. Under the Telecommunications Act 1997 (Cth), only persons authorised by us can undertake work on Telstra's assets or enter a facility owned or operated by Telstra. Interfering (including unauthorised entry or tampering) with the infrastructure is a criminal offence under the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).
